The ACS gave me knowledge and allows me to educate family and friends on what cancer I was dealing with and what to expect with each stage of fighting the disease. I found the section on radiation and chemotherapy to be very informative. Luckily I only had to endure radiation, and prepared me on what expect during and after the treatment. I also used my own therapy with my children, even though services were provided free of charge through Sutter General for families dealing with cancer, I was able to take an idea that they had and incorporate that into my family. Art therapy worked for my children. They were able to express what they were feeling and the fears they had regarding my illness. The day of my diagnosis I made sure my children were aware of what was going on and we talked about it just about every day. I also had them research information using the ACS website to help answer any questions they might have. They also enjoyed reading stories of other patients. We now use the website to find events to participate in, and stay involved to support others in the struggle. I am a survivor and have had the opportunity to share my story to help others stay inspired and maintain hope that they will also survive. References American Cancer Society. (2011).
